Our Meals
Supporting every child’s learning journey
Our Meals
Food plays an important role in each child’s day at Warradale Community Children’s Centre. All meals and snacks are freshly prepared on site by our centre chefs, using simple, wholesome ingredients that support growing bodies and active minds. With our kitchen located at the heart of the centre, food is not something hidden away, but a visible and valued part of daily life.
Children have the opportunity to see their meals being prepared and, when appropriate, to take part in simple food experiences such as helping with basic preparation or learning about ingredients. This connection encourages curiosity about healthy eating and where food comes from. Our chefs are also a familiar and friendly presence, interacting with the children throughout the day and helping to create a warm, community-focused atmosphere around mealtimes.

Learning Through Food
Children are encouraged to take an active interest in food and cooking as part of their everyday learning. Simple, hands on experiences such as washing vegetables, mixing ingredients or picking herbs from the garden help children feel involved and capable. These moments are not only enjoyable, they also support practical life skills, early maths concepts, language development and confidence in trying new foods.
By being involved in the process, children begin to understand where their food comes from and how it is prepared. Conversations around ingredients, seasons and healthy choices happen naturally throughout the day, guided by both educators and our chefs. This approach helps build positive relationships with food in a relaxed and supportive environment, where mealtimes are seen as an opportunity to learn, connect and share.
Learning in the Garden
Our vegetable garden is a valued part of daily life at the centre, giving children the opportunity to grow, care for and harvest their own produce. From planting seeds and watering seedlings to watching vegetables ripen, children are involved in every stage of the process. These hands on experiences help them develop patience, responsibility and an understanding of how food moves from garden to plate.
The garden also supports broader learning in a natural and meaningful way. Children explore concepts such as seasons, weather, sustainability and caring for the environment through real experiences rather than worksheets or set lessons. When herbs and vegetables from the garden are used in the kitchen, children see the direct connection between their efforts and the meals they enjoy. It’s a simple but powerful way to build respect for food, nature and the world around them.
